In Baleem, Laspur Valley, Pakistan, families rear yaks and use their wool to make ropes and tents. Yak hair is plucked once a year, typically by men, and spinning the wool into rope is often a collaborative family activity. Due to limited market availability, most families make their own ropes, which are valued for their strength and craftsmanship. It is considered an honour to receive one as a gift.
This exhibit looks at the story of the craft that is made up of time, matter and motivation. The aim is to preserve the local practice embedded in landscape and leverage it for sustainable economic development of craft communities
